Providence Attractions
When the capital city of Rhode Island made its comeback, the people in charge knew what to keep and what to do away with. During one of the most successful urban revitalization projects in recent history, gone were the rundown building facades and the concrete covering two of the city’s major waterways; kept were the countless historical landmarks that make Providence home to more buildings on the National Historic Register than any other place in the country. This city has seen major changes – most for the better – and has been extremely successful at melding contemporary concepts and architecture with its wealth of historic elements. If you haven’t been in, say, the last ten years, then you don’t know Providence. Here, the best of old and new worlds mingle to make a sophisticated metropolis that’s both quirky and quaint.
Trinity Repertory Theatre
201 Washington Street, Providence, RI 02903; Tel. 401.351.4242
You’re sure to be entertained at a production by this resident theatre company that has a proven track record of providing some of the best stage performances in the city. The Trinity Repertory Theatre has received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre Company, produced PBS television specials and traveled internationally since its inception in 1964. Notably, the company is deeply committed to showcasing world premiere works – nearly 50 of which have appeared on stage since the theatre’s beginnings. Classical and contemporary productions are also consistently represented, in addition to annual productions of A Christmas Carol (during the holiday season) and Shakespeare plays (during the summer months). Its home, the Lederer Theatre, is a National Historic Landmark. Truly making theatre accessible to all, the company sponsors “pay-what-you-can” nights for all of it productions and also has student rush and half-price day-of-show tickets.
